There’s a saying “happy wife, happy life”. And while I’m not saying she’s not happy, but Melinda Karlsson misses home, Ottawa. It could mean absolutely nothing, but Erik Karlsson is “going to take a long hard look on San Jose”. This is still very unlikely to happen despite the impression that the Sharks made on him. It’s expected by insiders that Karlsson will be returning closer to home, or maybe in fact, at home. Tampa Bay looks like a strong competitor for Karlsson, especially with fellow Swede Victor Hedman. But they need to resign Brayden Point and with only $8 mill in cap space, it seems incredibly unlikely that Karlsson’s talents are taken there especially still being far away from Ottawa. The Rangers are next, with Zibanejad, Lundqvist, Fast and if the Rangers chose to resign him, another former teammate in Fredrik Claesson. They have more than enough money to take on a Karlsson contract and it’s possible his value could’ve decreased after an injury filled season. After the Rangers, you’re really left with Ottawa, Montreal, Toronto, and Buffalo. You can already scratch out Toronto and Buffalo according to insider reports. Karlsson has no interest there. But Montreal is a close maybe, and the Sens aren’t in it 100%, but it’s believed that the Ottawa Senators SHOULD make another pitch to the pending UFA. An $80 mill contract wasn’t enough for Karlsson. But it may no longer require that much money. Sweeten the deal a little and maybe Karlsson accepts it for him and his wife to live in Ottawa all year round. There’s too many if’s.
