The iconic wedding dress of Grace Kelly
On April 19, 1956, the actress Grace Kelly and the Sovereign Prince Rainier III of Monaco were married in a religious ceremony, which had about 1100 guests. For the religious marriage, Princess Grace chose a beautiful, elaborate lace-and-pearl dress, unlike the simpler piece she had used in the civil wedding on the previous day. To this day, Grace's wedding gown inspires several brides, having even inspired Catherine Middleton, the current Duchess of Cambridge, at her wedding to Prince William in 2011.
The Princess Grace wedding dress was made by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) costume designer Helen Rose. Helen had already made dresses for Grace to use in her films, even getting an Oscar for this. The costume designer had the help of about 30 dressmakers to make Grace's dress, which was ready in six weeks. The refined high-necked suit, long sleeves and large skirt, made of silk taffeta, which was divided into ten different pieces, was given to the Princess as a present by MGM.
To complete the look, Grace opted for a circular veil laced with floral arrangements and pearls only at the edges, leaving her face visible even to the most distant people. The Princess did not wear a tiara, but rather a Juliet cap arrangement decorated with orange blossom flowers. Her shoes were from the New-Yorker Evins and were no more than five centimeters in length, as Grace should not be taller than Rainier.
During the procession to the altar, Grace carried a bible next to her bouquet of lilies. The bible had been decorated with silk, lace and pearls by MGM. The arrangement was left on the altar of St. Nicholas Cathedral after the wedding.
The iconic wedding dress of Grace Kelly, literally a work of art and one of the most beautiful dresses of all time (the most beautiful, in my opinion), is under possession of the Museum of Art of Philadelphia, the state where the Princess was born.
