The Gray Whale (Eschrichtius robustus) is a large baleen whale. It reaches a length of almost 50 feet long (15 meters) and a weight of about 40 tons! It lives between 55 and 70 years. The name "gray whale" comes from the gray patches and white mottling on its dark skin. Each year in January and February, a group of Gray Whales comes to a tranquil bay on the Pacific coast of the Baja Penninsula in northern Mexico to give birth to their calves and to nurture them until they are mature enough to migrate north to feed. The whales in the bay are incredibly curious and friendly and will come right up to your boat and spy-hop, tail lob and just put on a show for you. It is really one of the more amazing wildlife interactions I have experienced. I took this photo in 2014 in Mexico from a boat in Bahia Magdelena. I had just invested in my first "professional" level camera lens, a 200-400mm f4 zoom lens, and this was the first time I had really used it. I like this photo for a couple of reasons. I love the detail of the water rolling off the whale's tail and back into the ocean. The #gray_whale , also known as the grey whale, gray back whale, Pacific gray whale, or California gray whale is a baleen whalethat migrates between feeding and breeding grounds yearly. It reaches a length of 14.9 meters (49 ft), a weight of 36 tonnes (40 short tons), and lives between 55 and 70 years. The common name of the whale comes from the gray patches and white mottling on its dark skin. Gray whales were once called devil fish because of their fighting behavior when hunted. The gray whale is the sole living species in the genus Eschrichtius, which in turn is the sole living genus in the family Eschrichtiidae.
