The Corinthian helmet is the most archaeologically documented Greek helmet in the entire Greek world. It is also the most broadcast and the most famous. Its typology is well known, thanks to the 250 specimens found in Olympia. The ceramic iconography of the late geometric testifies the first cases of Corinthian helmets around 700 BC. J.-C., where we find represented hoplites wearing a helmet morphologically close to a contemporary copy found in Olympia. The appearance of the Corinthian helmet is contemporary with the last copies of "Kegelhelme" attested in the Etruscan world, but also in the Adriatic world. The Corinthian helmet becomes from the beginning the essential piece of the hoplitic armament. The first typology of Corinthian helmets was established in 1936 by Erich Kukahn, following the resumption of excavations at Olympia, and was taken over and improved by H. Pflug in the catalog Antike Helme published in 1988. This typology establishes the existence of three main forms for the Corinthian helmet. The typology established by Pflug is based on two criteria: the morphology of the cap on the one hand and its relation with the lower parts of the helmet on the other hand. The typo-chronology is mainly established thanks to the copies discovered in excavations and dated by the associated material, but also by the iconography of the Greek vases.
