Grosse Ile is the largest of the islands located in the Detroit River. Several well-to-do Detroiters, looking for retreat from the hustle and bustle of city life, built summer residences on the island. Gordon W. Lloyd, a talented young architect from England, designed several homes on East River Road in the Gothic Revival style strongly influenced by the writings of Andrew Jackson Downing. Among them was this home, built in 1859 for Samuel T. Douglass and his wife, Elizabeth. Mr. Douglass served as a judge on both the Wayne County Circuit Court and Michigan Supreme Court. In 1882, Douglass and his former law partner (and brother of his wife), James V.
