What's entertainment? I’d say it’s something we spend our free time or money on. Something we do for fun, expecting nothing in return but satisfaction. The ballet, a circus, house parties, holidays, Netflix, sport, festivals (excluding Fyre) and oversaturated Instagram posts. That’s entertainment. I was dining in downtown Guanajuato in perfect peace. Pulled pork tacos sat in front of fresh pineapple juice. Then the mariachi man arrived. He was unsteady on his feet and when he introduced himself, what smelt like pure ethanol hit me in the face – an unwelcome amuse bouche. I politely shook my head and said no thanks, but he chose to ignore me and began playing. Loudly. His hands were out of time, his voice out of tune. I shook my head again. He gave me the international give-me-some-money sign and then  continued playing, this time even louder. I carried on eating, enjoying the tacos significantly less than before. I was not going to accept defeat. He went up an octave. Drunken, high-pitched shrills battled through random strumming. I accepted defeat. Twenty pesos was the price to transfer him to the next table. That wasn’t entertainment, I thought, that's extortion.
