New 9” plates dressed in my new matte lapis glaze! Pretty satisfied with the results of my hunt for the perfect, intense, bright shade of cobalt blue. First, I found a handful of recipes that seemed to fit what I was looking for - a true matte glaze in a deep blue that was vibrant and not too dark- and mixed up a bunch of them: rinse and repeat... I learned that a lot of talc in a recipe tends to make cobalt go lavender, and that this can also can be influenced by a few degrees of temperature difference from the top to bottom of my electric kiln as well as the cooling rate. I had success with a recipie I found on Glazy.com with some slight alterations to the recipe, fired in a cone 6 slow cool cycle from The Complete Guide to Mid-Range Glazes by @john.britt1 - so grateful to John and all of you potters out there who are excited and willing to share their glaze chemistry findings and experience. This glaze applies really nicely, doesn’t move in the kiln because it is so clay heavy, and will be a well suited base to expand into other color options. A little hyperlapse of wax resisting the bottoms of our 8" plates a couple of days ago. We high fired them yesterday, and they are currently still cooling in the kiln. We fired a little over 50 of these for @backhausbread in three different glazes, along with cups and other things. I find that it's just best to forget completely about the kiln the day after firing, because there is no way we can open it that day to see how everything has turned out. I went from thinking taking things out with gloves was okay... to waiting till they are absolutely room temperature. Hands down, will never go back. But back to the wax resisting... You can see how the first line takes me the longest, getting it even and solid, and the rest is a quick fill in. Even that has taken time to speed up--hundreds of plates of practice. This saves us time and glaze as we dip them in the glaze, and it takes a lonnnnngggg time to wipe that much glaze off each plate, and it's hard to do it evenly. Plus, I get to pretend I'm painting. But... reverse painting? Also, this is what some of us call a whirligig-- I spin the base manually with my left hand at the pace I want while I paint the wax resist on.

These new @gr.pottery.forms WA forms are crazy. They make making a plate so easy it almost feels like cheating. The biggest bonus in my mind is that it eliminates the need to trim. When I normally make plates they require a lot of trimming which takes up time and makes a lot of scraps. Even though this step of the process has gotten a lot easier, there is still quite a bit of work left to go in adding texture and glazing this plate.
