From time to time I get questions about lighting and what’s best for headshots. Natural light? Studio light? Outdoors? Indoors? And I always come back with the same answer, something I learned years ago when I emailed over 20 nyc casting directors and asked the same question. And they all got back to me with the same answer “It doesn’t matter as long as the shots look like the person”. - With all of the digital capabilities, lighting techniques, filters, and presets these days it’s easy to make people look absolutely incredible. If you are a good photographer and understand light and photography amazing images can be made. But is a pristine and glowing image of perfection that gets a bunch of Instagram love going to help you book roles? If casting is expecting a glimmering god or goddess and you walk in with your everyday hair and unique authenticity is your headshot really doing you justice? - This has been a tough line for me. As I continue to push myself creatively I always want to take better and better headshots. That usually falls to lighting and making people look incredible- but I catch myself a lot and pull things back to keep it real. - Ownership of your authenticity is so powerful in a headshot. - I try to focus more on moments and energy than stunning perfection. Don’t get me wrong I’m obsessed with light but more in how I can use it to tell a persons story the best way I can. Or how I can manipulate it to create a subtle mood of some sort that suggests something interesting. - This shot is of @emkouatch . Her vibe was just so present for the entire shoot. In my post yesterday I mentioned confidence in front of the camera. I want to touch on that some more. - Question: how confident are you in juggling chainsaws? Not very right? Why would you be, you’ve never done it or taken classes on it...you have zero experience doing it. You have no base in which to come at it confidently. And you need to or you’re gonna chop your arm off! - Now taking pictures is not as intense as juggling chainsaws I know, but the confidence principle is similar. - People that juggle chainsaws have many years of practicing juggling before they even think about picking up chainsaws. They fail countless times but yet they push on and explore new techniques and get better and better. But at the base of a skill like this is confidence. Confidence in their ability even through the bad days. This breeds discipline and eventually mastery. But at the very beginning of their juggling adventure they have to have confidence in themselves. Confidence that with practice and dedication they can be great. - So the next time you’re getting pictures taken choose confidence. Blind confidence in yourself to be present. To fail. To grow. To play. And to be great at taking pictures. And know the more you do it and stay confident the better you’ll feel in front of the camera - which is very important in getting good pictures! - This is a shot of @thegirlmodel who brings such an effortless and grounded presence every time we shoot together.
