Happy Friday friends ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 2019 if we want to address human health we have to include planetary health in the same conversation. For that reason I’ve updated this comparison and added the water inputs and greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of these two foods. The advantages of making switches like this, from animal protein to sources of plant protein from whole foods, are enormous and include: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, various cancers and premature death. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Improved diversity of healthy gut bacteria. The effects of this alone are vast as our gut health directly affects our immune system, our mood via ‘feel good’ neurotransmitter production, the health of our gut lining and much more. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - A more favourable amino acid ratio. That’s right! Plant based foods contain all 9 essential amino acids in ratios that cause less cellular ageing. You will still easily reach the RDI for all 9 essential amino acids easily consuming a balanced plant based diet. On the other hand animal based protein sources are much richer in Leucine and Sulfur containing amino acids which are associated with cellular ageing and disease pathways when consumed in excess. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ - Decreased strain on our planet which is so desperately calling out for help. Read the 2018 paper on the Environmental Impacts Of Food by J Poore in the references for more information on this. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ It’s not about being perfect or adopting a label. Just making changes for some of your meals helps! It’s not all or nothing. Perhaps try black bean tacos instead of steak tacos this week. Spice and/or marinate then as you desire like you would with meat and see how you go ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Simon

Had the privilege of watching @gamechangersmovie a few days ago ahead of the release . Thank you @jamescameronofficial @suzyamiscameron and @lightningwilks - it’s incredibly well done with lots of science (what I liked most about it) that explains how a plant based diet can help you with your physical health + performance. It’s out at cinemas globally in the coming months - I highly recommend going and watching it if you are thinking about a plant based diet and want to learn more about exactly how changing your diet may help you achieve your goals. Great to see guys like @djokernole and @lewishamilton advocating for a plant based lifestyle. When these guys speak everyone listens. The science is so so clear - forget the chaos you read on social media from people who are profiting off of the confusion - it’s not only a wonderful way to fuel your body for physical results but is also kinder to our environment and animal friends. Lastly, new podcast live today with my good friend and all round great guy @nimai_delgado who is one of the cast members in the @gamechangersmovie - in this episode that we recently recorded in Los Angeles we talk about the common concerns and barriers that may stop people from trying a plant based diet or vegan lifestyle. Enjoy. Simon

Eggs are admittingly a good source of protein and micronutrients - but how do they stack up against a plant based protein source like tofu? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ When you switch from egg scramble to tofu scramble you get less saturated fat + cholesterol and instead get more polyunsaturated fats - as I’ve mentioned before this substitution lowers ones risk of cardiovascular disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ On top of that, we know that omnivores have a certain strain of bacteria which metabolise choline into TMA in the gut which is eventually converted into TMAO in the liver - a compound associated with cardiovascular disease that whilst not fully understood yet is being studied heavily by several research labs. So even if you’re not 100% plant based, choosing tofu scramble (lower in choline) means less TMA production. If you’re vegan, you don’t need to stress about TMAO as studies have shown people eating a 100% plant based diet have minuscule amounts of the pathogenic bacteria that produce TMA. Another probable mechanism to explain why very plant focussed or plant predominant populations have extremely low risk of cardiovascular disease. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ What about B12? Whilst commercially produced eggs do contain Vitamin B12 this is via chicken feed supplementation so skipping the middle man and taking a B12 supplement is no big deal - plenty of omnivores these days are B12 deficient due to the depletion of our soil and overuse of chemical pesticides + herbicides. Whether free range chickens lay eggs that contain B12 depends on the soil quality. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’re keen to give a tofu scramble a go checkout my recipe at plantproof.com (all of my recipes are 100% free). I find adding spices like turmeric, cayenne pepper + cumin along with fresh garlic and chives is a great way to make the tofu taste incredible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Give it a go and let me know how you go

I cannot stress enough how important variability in your food selection is. You have over 1,000 unique species of bacteria in your gut who’s cells completely out number your own cells and when you limit the range of plants you eat you place yourself at risk of diminishing the number of species and total healthy bacteria count. Why is this important? Healthy people with good digestion have a good diversity of healthy bacteria and unhealthy people, including those with chronic disease like Type 2 Diabetes and Obesity, typically have a less diverse gut bacteria population. Not only do these healthy species of bacteria help us metabolise nutrients in the food we eat but they also produce specific compounds which are vital to healthy cell function throughout the body. These guys are on your side and help you maximise what you get from your food and play an important role in cell signalling throughout the body so it’s best we look out for them ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ For more information on cultivating healthy gut bacteria listen to episode 17 of the Plant Proof podcast with @theguthealthmd. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ At a high level eat a diversity of plants, make friends with all sorts of different legumes and unrefined grains, eat your kraut and other fermented foods, avoid antibiotics, anti-inflammatories and artificial sweeteners where you can, choose organic food where you can or wash conventional produce thoroughly, and breastfeed your babies for as long as possible (some breast milk even at age 2-3 if possible is great in addition to their food of course) to set up their gut bacteria (in the case of short supply work to increase supply which @ellenfisher has done a great blog on and if that fails try to find donor milk from another mother who has excess supply. Ellen and I spoke about this in our podcast episode if you want more info). ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Happy weekend, happy gut! P.S if you get a chance please go to ‘vote’ in my highlights and vote for the plant Proof podcast in the Australia podcast awards ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Simon

A delicious baked oatmeal to try. Hope you’re having a great week friends. With the plant based milk add just enough to cover the oats - more you add the more mushy it will be. Simon

Enjoying my little coffee (without butter). I’ve got a question for you: do you think saturated fat consumption is associated with atherosclerosis & clogging of your arteries? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Swipe left & read a beautifully articulated summary from Briggs, published in 2017 which explains why there is conflicting science. One of the most important things about nutritional science is understanding if you remove something from ones diet what will it be replaced with, & thus what is the NET result in terms of measured health outcomes. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As Briggs describes replacing saturated fat in one’s diet with polyunsaturated fats or whole grains markedly reduces cardiovascular disease risk. This is further strengthened by the fact multiple large cohort studies show vegetarians (incl vegans) have lower LDL & Total cholesterol than omnivores. The AHS-2 study has been studying over 96,000 people from USA and Canada who are omnivorous, pescetarian, vegetarians or vegan. All of these people do not drink alcohol, smoke and are physically active most days so it’s like a controlled trial degree - well much more controlled than many other population studies. BMI decreases in a step wise fashion (vegans only ones with BMI in healthy range) with the removal of animal products as does the risk of cardiovascular and all cause mortality. It’s worth noting these are very health conscious people - so the vegans are not eating vegan junk food all day. These are just a few examples of 100s I have on file that show saturated fat raises LDL cholesterol and is linked to poorer health outcomes. Usually studies suggesting otherwise compare saturated fat consumption to highly refined carb consumption to show no effect. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ So with this in mind my tips: - eat less animal products (they’re typically far higher in sat fat than plants) - swap foods rich in sat fat plant protein sources & foods rich in polyunsaturated fat (legumes, nuts, seeds) - eat more whole grains - Ditch the oils or minimise greatly. Especially coconut oil which is marketed as a new health food but it’s 90% saturated fat & whilst not raising cholesterol as much as butter, it still does raise LDL & Total chol. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Simon
