Raf Simons AW04 “Shipwreck” Washed Grey Crewneck BIN: NFS Collection: August/Winter 2004 “Waves” Size: 52 (fits US L/XL) Raf is known for bringing conceptual narrative to the runway, and in regards to his 2004 “Waves” collection, Spanish philosopher Jose Ortega y Gasset’s “Shipwrecked on Strange Shores” illustrates the foundation of the subcultures embodied through the collection. Although this poem out of context applies to humanity as a whole, these chosen subcultures had the underlying motive of self-fulfillment, achieved through isolation from a mainstream society. The poem is rendered in a distinctly loose handwriting style, printed with a thick layer of ink that contrasts the over-dyed grey silhouette. Raf Simons AW02 “Virginia Creeper” Crewneck BIN: $1,650 Size: 48 (fits US L) Condition: 8.5/10 (Natural distressing on cuffs, hem, and around neck tag) Collection: August / Winter 2002 “Virginia Creeper” The goal of Raf Simon’s AW03 collection was to explore the duality of man and nature, illustrated by it’s reference to the pest plant “Virginia Creeper,” which kills other plants around the manmade structures they frequent. When strictly examining the formal nature of the produced garments, one may think the collection was a study on american school uniforms or summer camp attire under the lens of 80s horror flicks… and they would be right. The horror aesthetic was further illustrated by the natural distressing of the silhouettes caused by a chemical treatment that over time eats away at the fabric induced by the wearer’s body heat. In regards to this graphic, “Virginia Creeper” is rendered in a style reminiscent of american varsity typography, arced over a high contrast image of the plant, with it’s scientific name “Parthenocissus quinquefolia” written underneath. This specific iteration features a wash that is reminiscent of a navy crewneck that has aged to perfection, illustrated by the unmatchable gradient throughout the silhouette. Raf Simons AW02 Virginia Creeper Longsleeve BIN: $635 Size: 46 (TTS S-M) Condition: 8.8/10 (Aged) Parthenocissus quinquefolia, known as Virginia creeper, is a species of flowering plant that frequents manmade structures in urban environments. It commonly damages, and kills other plants, and its ability to propagate via its extensive root system makes it difficult to eradicate. Raf’s AW02 collection shares the same title. At it’s core, this collection was focused on the duality of man and nature, however formally, the produced garments were straight out of an 80s horror movie. The typography is a clear reference to American varsity apparel, which was the basis for most of the silhouettes throughout the collection.
