“After so long an absence
At last we meet again:
Does the meeting give us pleasure,
Or does it give us pain? -
-
The tree of life has been shaken,
And but few of us linger now,
Like the prophets two or three berries
In the top of the uppermost bough. -
-
We cordially greet each other
In the old, familiar tone;
And we think, though we do not say it,
How old and gray he is grown! -
-
We speak of a Merry Christmas
And many a Happy New Year;
But each in his heart is thinking
Of those that are not here. -
-
We speak of friends and their fortunes,
And of what they did and said,
Till the dead alone seem living,
And the living alone seem dead. -
-
And at last we hardly distinguish
Between the ghosts and the guests;
And a mist and shadow of sadness
Steals over our merriest jests.” -

After a tiring but overall successful week of post-war and contemporary auctions in London, we bid goodbye to old friends. This morning I caught my former comrade and chief auctioneer for Christie’s, Jussi Pylkkänen, as he said farewell to David Hockney’s seminal ‘Henry Geldzahler and Christopher Scott’, 1969, on its way to its lucky new owner. The previous evening Jussi had presided over the sale of this large double portrait of Geldzahler, legendary curator of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and his partner. Three telephone bidders competed for the work, eventually selling for £37.7 million ($49.5 million) - the top price of the week -

I'm not much for traditional poetry but Longfellow's Pslam of Life resonates with me pretty dang deeply. This stanza in particular made me go yaaaaasssss.
"Art is long, and Time is fleeting,
And our hearts, though stout and brave,
Still, like muffled drums, are beating
Funeral marches to the grave."
This is it guys. Make the piece of art (life) you want while you still have the time.
