On my Instagram IGTV right now: “The Static Comes From My Broken Heart” from MAS CAMBIOS on Track & Field Records In 2003. Dang, I love this album. Waking up to life, feeling, even sadness, inspired by every beat and every pulse. Touring, 200 shows a year, recording in Bensonhurst, NY, taking the MNR and the Shuttle Bus due to More Changes on the F train (Mas Cambios). I remember playing Red Blue Eyes, my brother’s song, with its double recorder solo, ala Roland Kirk, and feeling a room get really excited for the first time. I was a sad young man, skinny as I’ll ever be, and all I keep from that time is the Joy of finding my own voice, and knowing I did. I remember sending the artwork in, on cardboard because I didn’t have a computer. I never knew what happened to it, and that’s why this album can’t be reissued, that and the fact that there is no Master Copy and Track & Field Records has been shut down for years! Herman Düne never got a big break nor a label for more than 2 albums, but boy if we have some solid work, I want to include this one. You’ll find versions of Show Me The Roof, You Stepped On Sticky Fingers, With A Fistful Of Faith on the Internet, but I believe this is the first time I sing this one since that time that is. #hermandune #hermandüne #mascambios #trackandfieldrecords #thestaticcomesfrommybrokenheart

Today, chronologically is NOT ON TOP a 2005 album on Track & Field Records, with the song “You Could Be A Model, Goodbye”. Major album for me. At the time I became obsessed with 7” records, New Orleans music and The Red Bird label. I was going to produce this on tape and in Mono. It was gonna be dirty and thick. Both my brother and I had really good songs, we were touring a lot, and we’d made enough money to record seriously. We’d met a really nice bunch of people, artists, intellectuals, rebels, party animals in Leeds in the UK, and they helped us set up a studio and accommodation for a while. I needed to have my friend and hero @julie.e.doiron on bass and singing. Herman Düne had never had a bass and sometimes it’s hard to change people’s routine but I had loved her music and voice since I’d met her in Chicago (see Episode#1 for timeline :D) , and she was a beautiful songwriter who loved New Morning and could play the guitar like no one else. She flew in from Canada. In the previous post I said how being confined to an All Men’s club on tour was getting to me, well from then on I needed to have more intelligent voices around me. I’d never had my sister Lisa sing on a song and she came to try it up. Incidentally it was the year BBC DJ John Peel had died, I was and still am thankful to him. I loved my brother’s songs on this album, like It Won’t Take The Pain Away or Little Wounds, it was so nice to play them. The song I chose to play today, “You Could Be A Model, Goodbye” was super simple, just two chords, but a weird phrasing that Julie learnt by heart while playing bass. I was reading a lot of Philip Roth, wearing a Rupert Mundys hat and this song is titled as an homage to Goodbye Columbus. The record was a surprising hit, we started playing sold out shows, got covers of music magazines (remember those?), festivals and radio play. We were still completely DIY in touring but it had become hard because the whole system was changing and the bigger venues we played couldn’t deal with amateurs like us anymore. #hermandune #notontop #indierock #youcouldbeamodel #lofihistory

IGTV for the song, and the 20th Anniversary chronology here:) 2008, Next Year In Zion, EMI/Virgin/Everloving/CitySlang. Some decisions we make sometimes, and mull over later. It could have been a two mic acoustic album, it would have been great. I loved these songs, I thought they were better than Giant. My Home Is Nowhere Without You is still my favorite, damn. “The choice is made and the wrong is done”, wrong music, wrong sound. We kept touring yearlong, including a lot of US dates. At the time my visual art was keeping me busy with shows and commissions whenever I wasn’t on the road. Today, I sing “Someone knows better than me”, I remembered all the lyrics, TG. Strange Moosic, 2011, on Strange Moosic Records. We toured so much with Zion that 2 years went by before we went back to a studio. A fantastic start for me of a friendship working with Sound Engineer Adam Selzer (Not On social media) in Portland, Oregon. If you find a sound person who is also a songwriter, stick with them. No one caught the Lil’Abner reference, when Al Capp had him discover the Shmoo, Abner, attracted to its song says “Ah Hears Strange Moosic”. I own the original strip for that. Al Capp is infamous for a disastrous interview with John & Yoko during the Bed In, but remember that Lil’Abner and The Shmoo might be one of the most influential works of Art of the XXth Century. Art, Art, Art, that was a lot of what I was focused on at the time. I wanted this record to be like an Art Book and I think it was the first of its kind. I ended up selling all these drawings at a gallery in Wien, including huge pieces I had done with the inflatable Gorilla on the Waffle House. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know was a sweet little song I’d first offered to my friend @raphaelharoche for himself. He passed on it and I’m glad he did because it’s one of my favorite Herman Düne songs, :) ... The Video for this was epic, shot in Austin with the impressive Jon Hamm who stuck to my storyboard! As always the videos were by @tobenseymour.
