A gorgeous scarlet kingsnake (Lampropeltis elapsoides) I found a few weeks ago. I was expecting to discover it out in the field hiding under bark or taking refuge under a log, I was not expecting to find it under a piece of tin right by our office building!
•
This was a lifer (my first specimen) for me and probably one of my favorite finds, I had been looking for one for over a year and a half, so this made my entire week. What is your favorite lifer experience? Tell me in the comment section below!
•
Swipe to see the video of its release, you can see where it was living.

Stay tuned for more photos and info on this cutie.

For #tbt I'm throwing it back to the time we found a large gray ratsnake at our field site in Tennessee a few years ago.
•
This was before I was comfortable with holding snakes. It might be surprising, but when I started doing field work, snakes made me nervous and weren't my favorite reptiles. Obviously, I respected them and recognized their importance. In these photos, I am laughing because I felt like an idiot - anytime the snake would turn around just to look at me, I'd shriek. Thanks to a super chill individual and the acknowledgement of how ridiculous I was being, this moment helped me get over the initial fear of handling snakes. I now hope to become involved in conservation and education focusing on venomous snakes.
•
It's funny how one little moment can change things for the better.

A common snapping turtle (Chelydra serpentina) found a few weeks ago making it's way to a wetland. Instead of using a path nearby, it was trying to crawl over a bulky trunk of a saw palmetto, but wasn't having much luck.
•
They are equipped with strong jaws, which allows them to eat about anything - carrion, amphibians, mammals, fish, birds, and even other turtles. According to the Animal Diversity Web, this species will decapitate other turtles before eating them, one thought is that it might be a territorial behavior, or just a really weird way of eating a meal.
•
Common snapping turtles can grow to almost a carapace length of 18 inches and weigh about 35 pounds, they are much smaller than the Alligator snapping turtle, an adult being 150 pounds with a length of 40 inches.
•
Common snapping turtles are surprisingly quick and flexible, handling them can be a bit tricky. Holding them by the back of shell is the best method, they should never be grabbed by the tail as this can cause sever spinal injury and even death. It is best to leave these animals alone when found as they can cause serious injury if mishandled. This guy maybe small, but a bite from him might require stitches.
•
After a little photo shoot, he was released on the path to the wetland - hopefully he stayed on it!
