LIKE A GIRL
.
I know many of us probably grew up with these words echoing in our heads. You run like a girl. Throw like a girl. Hit like a girl. Boys said it to us and they used it with each other as an insult: you sound like a girl, talk like a girl, act like a girl. The message was clear - doing anything like a girl was not okay.
.
Yesterday in a Washington hiking group on Facebook a man posted a photo captioned, “Doing my best impression of every girl hiking picture.” In the photo he is facing away from the camera, leg jaunty, butt out, hip cocked. I would later learn this is termed the horse trot pose. Of course he posted this as a joke! It’s always a joke! God ladies, calm down! But the message was pretty clear to me. And if it wasn’t clear the comments made it clearer.
.
People accused him of wearing too many clothes for it to be an authentic portrayal of “every girl hiking”. They suggested he go with shorter, tighter shorts, or take off his top. People laughed about how women only strike this pose so they can share it and get comments from “thirsty” guys.
.
People also had other ideas about what poses he should have used. Obviously “every girl” hiking does yoga poses at the top. Some people thought it was a jumping, butt kicking pose. But regardless of what pose it was people agreed: women are all the same.
.
Do you hear the misogyny here? The subtle reference to “like a girl”. This accusation underneath the joking? What they are saying is your hiking, your love of nature, the sweat and toil and tears, whatever you do outside, whatever that looks like for each of you, I’m going to boil it all down to one stereotype that paints every single one of you as someone who just wants to hike so you can get a picture of your ass to show off on the Internet. That’s what every woman does. ***Continued in comments***
The urban dictionary defines "Adulting" as carrying out one or more of the duties and responsibilities expected of fully developed individuals (paying bills, working, running errands, spending money on not fun stuff, etc.). Well I just gotta say adulting is overrated! I just wanna be on permanent vacation and do fun things! I was made for retirement! Who's with me ♀️

Yesterday the built up condensation from my AC leaked through a vent in my bathroom ceiling because there was some clogs and the wall will probably need to get opened up and replaced. And it made me think how much adulting can suck! I'm definitely not ready to be a homeowner! Instead I'm going to lay by the pool and let my apt maintenance deal with it because that's what I pay an over inflated rent for!

What's the last "adult" thing you did Are you adulting this weekend or are you gonna have fun a play

Day 1 (500meters ) Off to a pretty epic start. Made our way to Hraunhafnartangi - the lighthouse on the most northern tip of Iceland. We set up our tents right on the ocean and were greeted by two seals just chillin in the water! Pretty epic start to our trip - hike starts in the morning! Gird your loins #icelandtraverse
When announcing that you are embarking on a long journey, one the first things people will ask you (a woman, of course) is whether or not you are carrying a gun. It’s as though this question is a stand-in for all of the other possibly more relevant questions about safety: Are you physically and mentally prepared? Do you know the signs of Lyme disease? How are you treating your water? Are you afraid of the dark?
I am not carrying a gun. There have been, however, two instances when I wished I were. The first involved everyone’s worst nightmare, both on and off the trail—a bonafide disturbed white male who made repeated, varied threats, and eventually fatally wounded one hiker and severely harmed another. It’s the kind of thing that everyone hints at happening, but never seems like it actually will. I hiked in this man’s orbit for several weeks, and the stabbing occurred one campsite from where I slept. The next morning, when I was intercepted by the county Sheriff at 6:45 a.m. and told that there were “bodies on the trail,” I wished I had a gun.

First video from the AT is out now!! (Link in profile) I have a big ask of you: if you know anyone that might be interested in following along with our videos from trail please send them the link to watch the vid, every follower matters. Thank you!
I’m going to do my best to post videos as frequently as possible as we head north. If you are unfamiliar with my vids, they are long form (~20 min) with a mix of trail and nature shots mixed in with some blogging. Natural sounds take precedence, though I do infrequently mix in some music. Let me know if there is anything you’d like to see in future videos.
See you up the trail.
