Ely Cathedral’s magnificent Octagon - in 1322 the cathedral’s original Norman crossing-tower collapsed, and in its place a colossal stone octagonal tower was built. With eight internal arches and timber vaulting, the tower creates a wonderful spacial effect that is enhanced by the lantern which appears to float miraculously above the cavernous space where the apse, chancel, and transepts of the cruciform cathedral meet. . Standing 55m high and 23m wide, the Octagon was constructed over a hundred years before Florence’s Duomo, and the unique structure is considered one of the great achievements of medieval engineering. The lantern is also octagonal in form, but with angles offset from the great tower.
