This week with our membership goalies we’ve discussed the concept of “bad ice”. This is an area of the ice where the net begins to shrink to the shooters eye. While discussing “bad ice” with the goalies, we’ve covered a few keys to making saves in this area. First, we discussed the importance of not over pushing in this area. If a player moves from blue angle down to bottom of the dot, that’s not a very long angle change. So we’ve really expressed the idea to the goalies about patience while drifting/shuffling down the arc. Second, as we get set to a precise angle we must slightly overlap our feet to each post. This will allow the goalie to maximize net coverage and give the shooter nothing to see. Third, when making saves in this area we want to focus on leaning instead of shifting. If we were to shift in this tight area we then cause our body to drift away from the net. This will cause bad rebounds because we over commit on pucks or we will have to scramble to get to loose pucks. Finally, keeping our arms inside/parallel with the post. By keeping our arms parallel with the post it will allow you to maximize net coverage. Also, 99% of the time pucks will just hit you if you keep your arms in line with the post. Minimal arm movement is important in this area. If we have good angle/depth we won’t need to extend on pucks in the “bad ice” In the 1st clip, we have focused a lot on drifting + shuffling. When working down the arc, we must gradually lose depth as puck starts to move down the zone. In the 2nd clip, we had the goalies take shots in the “bad ice” area. Notice during each shot the goalies did a great job getting proper angle which allowed them to make simple hand saves.
