So, imagine you head away from the van and realise you left the pump on, risking 120L of flooding if anything sprung a leak The answer is to turn it off remotely using HomeKit!! Next step is to add a water leak detector for a completely automatic system. This is made possible with a Raspberry Pi relay board and homebridge software. #vanconversion #vanbuild #homeautomation #raspberrypi #plumbing #overthetop #homebridge #nevergoingtostop

With the move to the new place imminent, I’ve decided to go the Smart route and am planning to install a few accessories that will make the experience secure, convenient and, I’m hoping the neighbours won’t mind, loud. The goal is to get accessories that, once plugged in, will appear on the Home app on iOS. Like Philips Hue bulbs and lamps which you can control using your phone and tablet. No more going downstairs to the kitchen to close the light.
But not everything is compatible with HomeKit. Planning on using Home Assistant (HAss) (on a Raspberry Pi) to raise the IQ on “dumb” devices like my old Samsung KU6470 TV so I can have basic control with my iPhone and Siri. For Google Home or Alexa enabled things like the Nest thermostat, I’m planning on using HAss or Homebridge so I can control these as well on iOS using Home and Siri.
AirPlay 2 will be enabled using Apple TV 4K (connected to the amp) and the old Airport Express and connected speakers (bless Apple for updating this piece of shit router, it finally has a purpose in life) to give the home multiroom audio capabilities.
Also planning on getting a weather station so I can control the garden sprinkler using rain and sun forecast based automations. With smart blinds, I imagine the shade automatically going up when it’s time to wake and going down once it’s dark.
I have a few specific requirements for Security, so will be looking into getting HomeKit compliant cameras. With HomeKit, you don’t need the extra mobile apps that vendors provide and you can view all the feeds on the same screen. You can view these on the Apple Watch as well..bonus points for Apple and HomeKit.
Pictures and videos will be posted as things progress.
