Cue Cosmos Is it possible to grow too many Cosmos? Isn’t that the same question I also pose about Zinnias, Alyssum, and on and on? But seriously, if there is one seed I’ve been chomping at the bit to get sowing, it’s Cosmos and this week it’s finally grow time! I foresee several flats of Sensation Mix, Bright Lights and Cups & Saucers Mix (a new version of the Cupcake Cosmos) in my future. I’m going to deal with the pesky reality of where to put them all (both inside and out) later. Staying in the garden dream this week
Here are a few quick tips for growing this fetching flower:
• Loves full sun, tolerates poor soil
• Bloom time is 3 months from sowing
• Start indoors 4-5 weeks before last frost
• Direct sow outdoors once the weather has warmed up
• Plant 12-18” apart
• To encourage bushier plants (which also means more flowers), keep plant pinched back
• Cosmos can become floppy, so they may need some sort of support
• Succession sow 3-4 weeks after initial sowing for continuous blooms all season long
• Keep deadheaded for non-stop flowers
• For cut flowers, harvest before the flowers have bloomed, when they’re rich, colorful buds
• A few gorgeous partners to Cosmos are Calendula, Dahlias, Nicotania and this combination shown here that I grew last summer…Cosmos with Zinnias & Cleome
• Pollinator-friendly
• Drought resistant
• Active self-seeder
What’s your favorite flower to grow with Cosmos? I need a reason to sow more seeds
