The Art of Islamic Pattern: A Living Tradition

Over the last 10 years there has been resurgence of interest in Islamic art as a contemporary art practice. The Art of Islamic Pattern, an educational partnership formed by Richard Henry and Adam Williamson in 2008, has been at the heart of this revival. From their studio in Hackney Wick, and more recently in Bow, East London, they have taught several hundred students practical skills in this venerable art form. The courses have centred upon geometric design, Arabesque floral motifs, and traditional craft practice. The works presented in this show, comprising painting, ceramics, woodwork, works on silk, have all been produced by former students and colleagues, many of whom have gone on to be successful artists in their own right.
Islamic art is renowned for its use of exquisite designs, which resonate with the most harmonious patterns found within nature and the cosmos. With the focus upon unity and harmony, rediscovering and recreating these designs, can be a deeply meditative experience. It is a particular pleasure to have the opportunity to display these works at Homerton University Hospital. Whilst there has been considerable interest in recent decades in the therapeutic potential of visual art, we believe this is the first time a show dedicated to Islamic art has been presented within a London hospital setting.

**personal post** Josie turned one last weekend! What a year. The longest, shortest, most exciting, (but also boring) and most exhausting one of my life as I'm sure most parents can relate to. I painted these bricks to celebrate. I got a big cheap sack of old wooden blocks in Oxfam and then used non-toxic rust-oleum 'painters touch' gloss paint to create a set of bricks that i then spent an unfathomable time (mostly during her meal times or in the evenings) making them all relate to each other which very much both hurt and pleased my tiny little brain. I then had a bit of a come down when they were finished so I then made Josies tiny party guests a brick each too- I don't know what you do with a single brick but anyway. It was procrastination of the best kind. Over the last year David and i have been very slowly doing up our first house that we bought last year (we bought a house, had a baby and got married in the space of 3 weeks..) And have mostly been enjoying doing it, kind of, although as Josie got older it became more challenging to keep the nails, paint, and sawdust out of her mouth as it would be when living in a semi-building site and doing it all yourselves. She's a funny and determined little creature who has been a joy to watch develop and grow up, and we feel so lucky to have such wonderful friends and family who love her. We've seen the paediatric ward at homerton hospital in the middle of the night far more times than I'd have liked with her reoccurring croup, & thank goodness for the nhs & for the tireless wonderful doctors and nurses - THANK you NHS. Going back to work at 5 months was a little upside down and I had to find ways of coming to terms with the emotions and guilt that this sometimes brings on, and also with my sick phobia and anxiety which also needed addressing. But with all this and the broken or sleepless nights I feel so grateful to have found this little creature in my life and for her to have made me a mummy. Hopefully this next year is now just full of calm and slobbing out and not painting any more %:&** walls.. happy birthday Josephine you gorgeous girl ❤
