When Henry W.B. Arnold and Anna Prescott Sherman met, they were both teachers, but they followed different paths to the classroom. Like her mother and aunt, Anna studied at what had been Mount Holyoke Women's Seminary, where even "hair-raising math problems" left her giggling. Henry was the son of a mill worker in Hopedale, Massachusetts who was able to attend Brown University because the spindle mill owner's wife, Mrs. Wescott, financed his tuition and he roomed with her son. Henry was a twin and when he and his sister were born, their parents let a wealthy person in town name the babies for $10 each. Henry was named for Henry Ward Beecher, noted preacher and brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, who's remembered for raising money to free slaves, championing progressive causee and his trial on adultery charges. Henry's twin sister, Elizabeth Meader, was presumably named for a colonial-era woman who survived a months-long kidnapping by natives with her children. Henry and Anna married in 1902 in Jamaica Plain and had six children: Constance, Margaret, Prescott, Priscilla, Elizabeth, and Kathleen. Three daughters went to Mount Holyoke. Henry retired at 70 from Hyde Park High School shortly after being named headmaster.
