Hue, Vietnam E6 7ER
These images were taken a long time ago, back in 1997 (at least I think 1997, as it could have been earlier). At the time I took them more for historical reasons than for any photographic project as such. The Beckton gas works was made famous byStanley Kubric in the film Full Metal Jacket (1987). At the time Kubric was terrified of flying so he started scouting for locations in the UK, where he was resident, that could be made to look like Vietnam at the height of American involvement in the war. The Beckton gas works was a legacy of the Victorian era, a colossus, arguably the largest of its kind in Europe and active up to 1969. Kubric and his team selectively damaged the industrial buildings, decorating them in fixtures appropriate for the era and pulled off the remarkable feat of transforming East London into Hue, Vietnam. When I took the pictures it still had a haunting feel about it, almost post apocalyptic. As time passed it was increasingly seen as a ‘problem’ and eye sore and eventually all trace of the former gas works disappeared. Much of my work over the years has been about subtle observations of decay, time, transience and of course, death. Despite the gas works having outlived their purpose, it saddens me to think of them no longer being there. If you know the area, it is a bleak hinterland that seems destined to remain so, the gas works paradoxically gave the area life. © Leon Woolls
