Implementing Student Agency
Hi there!
Student Agency” is somehow considered to be the new buzzword among IB teachers, however it’s not altogether new. This term was introduced through the 2018 PYP’s enhancements released last year. It’s in fact a shift towards making learners more autonomous to implement and improve their problem-solving and decision-making skills. Our job as teachers is to facilitate their active participation and help them to have their own voice.

The aim of Student Agency is actually creating more space and opportunities for students to set goals, choose their own differentiated activities and projects along the lines of inquiry based on their interests, needs and curiosity in a learner-centered environment.
There are obviously numerous ways to give your students A Voice, get them reflect on their learning process and actively engage them in making some of the decisions for their class. “Essential Agreements” could be one of the first activities done in the first week of the academic year. Self grouping and Flexible seating can also make them think where they can focus better on tasks in hand.
I decided to use this board as part of the ongoing process of implementing autonomy to let them be heard and make them feel they can make decisions as important members of an active community.
I’d love to know how you introduce agency and give voice to your students in your classrooms. It totally depends on your group of students and how much autonomy they may have been exposed to earlier.

Our “who we are” inquiry poster is filled! I love introducing new I.B. Units and seeing where students lead the discussion. Some deeper ideas they wrote down were: my ancestors, my DNA, my passions, religion, my language, nature, my body, my emotions, etc... They were super engaged and kept adding ideas to the poster throughout the day. Afterward, we looked at the 6 transdisciplinary themes and determined that we were going to focus on the theme “Who We Are” throughout this unit.
