This beautiful and intricate sculpture of a Rajasthani woman is made from a special type of sandalwood called Srigandha. It is an age old craft from Rajasthan, India and was highly patronised by the royals. . . The craftsmen from the Jangid Family living in Churu, Rajasthan engage in creating these wood carved, sandalwood sculptures. They have won many awards . . I was informed that this particular sculpture was done by Shri Sitaram Jangid. . I came across this beautiful creation at the Jaya He store at the Mumbai International Airport. . . A feast from the yore, one that surely calls for siesta. In fact it incapacitates you to keep your eyes wide open if the lunch has been Puri and Doodhpaak ( Gujarati take on rice and milk dessert ). Doodhpaak means to cook the milk until it slightly caramelises and cooks the rice. As compared to kheer/paysam, Doodhpaak is thinner in consistency and the amount of rice used is very little, just to give that occasional bite. The star ingredient of this dish is Charoli/chironji that is cooked along with the rice. It lends Doodhpaak that signature taste. Enjoyed cold or hot it is a mishtan that is made to mark celebrations in Gujarati households. What I also share here is the Hurbai plate. #notsponsored . A soulful work of art on a platter, literally. Hurbai masi is an inspiring lady creating such masterpieces of kutchhi pottery since the age of 15, she is 58 now. I recently read the following in the introduction of a cookbook titled ‘Mediterranean Claypot Cooking’ by Paula Wolfert. Couldn’t stop myself from sharing it here because handcrafted pottery and wood are my favourite mediums to work with... ‘These vessels also speak of the potter’s skill. For eons these craftsmen have been essential partners to cooks.
