Celebrated concurrently with Mother Mary’s Feast in Mumbai early September, is the Hindu festival of Ganeshotsav, commemorating the birth of the elephant headed, potbellied, one tusked Lord Ganesha . Ganesha, the most beloved of Hindu Gods, God of New Beginnings, Wisdom ,Intellect and Success is worshipped before commencement of new projects, as he’s believed to be a remover of obstacles . Hindu mythology narrates the occasion of his birth - The Goddess Parvati made a small clay figure to stand guard while she bathed .Her husband Lord Shiva , on his return, wanted to see her, but was obstructed by her zealous guard. Enraged, Shiva decapitated the little guard, only to be filled with remorse later when things became clear. He instructed his deputies to quickly get the head of the first living creature they saw, and that happened to be an elephant . So was born Ganpati or Ganesha .
The festival is celebrated all over India with great pomp and splendour for ten days. Glorious, magnificent idols, small and large, with various socio-religious themes are created by sculptors in the run up to the festival, with no expense spared. Smaller ones are welcomed home and huge ones are set up on stages in community areas. Rituals, prayers and Vedic chants, feasts for guests abound for the days the idol is kept, from 1-10 days, as per one’s preference.
On the last day, the idols are all taken in processions, with much fanfare to be immersed in the sea, where they disintegrate. Due to ecological concerns, many families immerse their idols in a bucket of water.
The immersion signifies the cyclic and temporary nature of life. The idol melts , changing its form to merge with Nature, from whence it came . It’s energy, though, remains unobliterated, as the deity arrives again the next year ! As do we, in our next cycle of rebirth ...
