#87 provides a great technical and tactical example of the defensive spread-eagle. It is important to understand the difference between the offensive spread-eagle and the defensive spread-eagle and not to view them both as simply an “ open hip “ maneuver. I utilize the terms “ offensive “ & “ defensive “ spread-eagle so my students can better form an understanding of the utilization of the movement. They are technically different and both provide a wide range of advantages to the player depending on the game situation. In this post I will break down the defensive spread-eagle and follow up in a few days with a post on offensive spread eagle. . Let’s first examine a couple of the technical aspects of the Defensive Spread-Eagle and how it differentiates from its offensive counter part. 1️⃣ The biggest difference is going to be in the front leg/skate. The front skate should be deep on its outside edge to initiate the counter balance against the engaged opposing player. Take a good look at #87 front leg in the slow mo. 2️⃣ The back leg will stay deep on the inside edge allowing for a strong push off the skate blade. This is extremely important as it allows #87 to stay in motion and harder to defend against. The consistent strong push off the back leg is crucial in executing against strong mobile opponents. . Let’s now look at a couple tactical aspects of the defensive spread-eagle. 1️⃣ The defensive spread-eagle is performed with your back to the opposing player. 2️⃣ It is a puck protection maneuver allowing the player with the puck to maintain good body position by placing his moving body between the defensive player and the puck. 3️⃣ Its an incredibly difficult maneuver to defend against when executed at a high level. It often forces the defensive player to over extend with stick position or due to the counter balance, forces the defensive players stick on to the back of the offensive player as shown in this video. .
