Godzilla: King Of Monsters - 2019. Director - Michael Dougherty. • I went into the latest Godzilla flick expecting big dumb monster fun. With these sorts of films, I can handle cheese (which I have an intolerance towards, particularly in cinema) In fact, when it comes to larger than life monster drama, I encourage it. I give plot a pass, and want to switch my brain off and gawp at the spectacle. When Godzilla: King Of Monsters submits itself to colossal creature carnage - it is enjoyable. The fights between the beasties are epic in scale, and the colours and chaos combined create impressive battle scenes. They fill the screen and feed my hunger for a big blockbuster. Unfortunately though, the film fails massively when it tries to take itself seriously. It does this quite a lot. In fact, the film is either trying to have significant deeper meaning, or it is balls out ridiculous - I feel that it needs to pick a side. Humans buddying up with the big dog, daft antagonist motives that feel like a Thanos rip off, and just downright cringe dialogue all fight against what should be simple cinematic entertainment. "King of the Monsters" makes the mistake of trying to focus on the human characters and their emotions. People go to these creature features for the beasts, not the feels. Experiencing this in a fairly busy cinema made me feel like I wasn't the only one struggling. Honestly I could feel the audience lose interest when characters start to take it in turns to churn out single sentences between them one..word..at..a..time. Eurgh. It felt like Power Rangers. Charles Dance is criminally under utilised, and Kyle Chandler acts like he is finding the whole ordeal too silly to be even slightly convincing. There is also a giant moth thing that is like Butterfrie from Pokemon, and for some untold reason is more badarse than three headed dragons and fire eagles. The more I type this, the more I'm realising how poor it was. I wanted dumb fun, but I got stupid shit that tries to be meaningful. And fails. Avoid. 4.5/10
