A 27-year-old German citizen identified only as Jennifer W. will be tried on Tuesday on a number of charges related to terrorism in the Higher Regional Court of Munich.
•
According to the indictment, in August 2014 the defendant traveled from Germany to Iraq, where she became an active member of ISIS’s “morality police” (hisbah), responsible for enforcing the terror group’s strict rules on dress code, public behavior, and alcohol and tobacco consumption. She allegedly patrolled parks and public spaces in Fallujah and Mosul with a Kalashnikov assault rifle and an explosive vest.
•
In the summer of 2015, Jennifer W. and her husband “purchased” a 5-year-old Yazidi girl who was part of a group of prisoners of war. They are accused of enslaving the child and her mother, holding them captive at their home in Fallujah. According to prosecutors, they would chain the child outdoors as a form of punishment. On one of these occasions, the child died of exposure after being shackled outside on an extremely hot day.
•
Prominent human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, who was appointed as the British government’s special envoy on media freedom last week, is representing the girl’s mother in the proceedings, along with German attorneys Natalie von Wistinghausen and Wolfgang Bendler.
•
This case is believed to be the first prosecution anywhere in the world for international crimes committed by ISIS militants against Yazidi victims. ISIS has waged an organized campaign of executions, enslavement, sexual violence, and forced recruitment of child soldiers, as well as the forcible displacement of an estimated 400,000 Yazidis from their homeland in Iraq.

➡️What has climate change got to do with human rights?
Extreme weather-related disasters and rising seas will destroy homes and ruin people’s ability to earn a living. What’s more, unless emissions are reduced significantly, around 600 million people are likely to experience drought and famine as a result of climate change. So you can see there’s a direct link between climate change and human rights, including the rights to life, health, food, water and housing.
➡️How are women affected by the changing climate♀️
Across the world, women form the majority of self-employed, small-scale farmers, so droughts, floods and crop failures will hit them first and hardest. They’re also more likely to take on the burden of collecting water, so will be acutely affected by severe water shortages.
➡️What does it mean for Indigenous People?
Indigenous People are often at the frontline of global warming because of their dependence on the environment. Many live in fragile ecosystems that are particularly sensitive to changes in climate. This threatens their cultural identity, which is closely linked to their traditional land and livelihoods.
➡️Will climate change mean more refugees?
As famines, droughts and natural disasters become more frequent, so the numbers of people on the move across borders will increase. While not all of these people will meet the legal definition of “refugees”, they should still be entitled to support from the countries most responsible for climate change.
➡️In your own opinion how climate change will affect #humanrights of people from all over the World❓

“My mom really inspired me to study law. I always felt so drawn to this sphere of lawyers surrounding me growing up, that I finally decided to become one myself. I really like participating in Moot Courts because of the interesting cases and especially for someone like me, coming from Russia, the concept of international criminal law is fascinating. I think the most important quality for a ‘Best Speaker’ is to be confident in defending your positions, and your team. I could definitely see myself working in the field of international law after finishing my studies, maybe even for the ICC.” Meet this year’s “Best Speaker” of the Russian Moot Court edition at the ICC – Marina Petrova (22 years old, St. Petersburg University)
In the context of its Academic Programme, the ICC supports Moot Court Competitions in Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish, with a view to also support Arabic and French versions in the future. These initiatives generate interest in the Court's work among students and academics promote awareness of and respect for international criminal law.

It me - in my least favorite habitat - presenting research on a poster.
I have spent over a year conducting research with this data and, as such, it has become part of my every day thoughts. Which is great for trying to work on my mixed-methods studies looking at cultural and societal trends… but terrible for, well, for everything else in my life. I’m currently trapped in the *this is all I’ve ever known* phase of turning this work into potential articles and to request more funding from UNFPA.
I find that I easily become completely absorbed in my work and get tunnel vision with everything else around me. ❓ Does this happen to you? How do you separate your work from your personal life? How do you stop yourself from bringing your research home with you?
