St. Matthew's church Templebreedy. Yesterday without even looking we stumbled upon several #abandoned churches, this was by far the most ruinous. Built in the Gothic revival style in 1779 overlooking Cork harbour on the site of a far older Church. Dun Aonghasa Located on the south side of Inismór, It is a semi circular stone fort over looking the Atlantic with a sheer drop and dramatic views that stretch the length of the Island Dun Aonghasa is deemed to be one of the best examples of its kind in Europe. Archaeologists, scholars and tourists come here from all over the world and it is likely to be given the official status of a world heritage site in the near future Excavations carried out in the 1990s indicated that people had been living at the hill top from c.1500 BC with the first walls and dwelling houses being erected c. 1100 BC. A remarkable network of defensive stones known as a Chevaux de Frise( c.700bc) surrounds the whole structure. According to buildingsofireland.ie this was originally a signal tower although according to more reliable sources it was a belvedere. It was built at the end of the 18th century in the parish of Rosscarbery. I've had a few people, (since I posted the round tower and church the other day) ask what a handball alley is. Well here is one I passed on the main road a couple of weeks ago in County Tipperary. Although there are about 200 handball clubs in Ireland run by the GAA, most of the old alleys/courts are no longer in use. Castle Magner. There are a right mix of periods to this place. The earliest records are from 1183 of a Motte and Baile castle built by one of Philip de Barry's (Anglo Norman ancestor of the Cork Barry's and one of the first invaders at the start of over 800 years of British occupation in Ireland) officers, William Magner. In 1200ad a Norman tower was built. This was turned into a bawn castle in the 15th century (the round tower pictured was the stair turret for the castle. A large house was built next to and parts joining the tower in the 18th century right on the edge of a sheer cliff. Glashare Castle. I don't know much about the history of this tower house except in the early part of the 16th century it was part of the estate of the Earls of Kildare. In Elizabethan times it was given to the Butler family who later handed stewardship to the Grace family from Foulkscourt.
