To have only been a 14 mile hike, it was one of the hottest and brutal hikes I’ve ever done. Roy Vernon Leroy Smith was born 100 years ago on January 8th, 1919 in Tampa, Florida to his Father, LeRoy Lamonby Smith and Mother, Verdie M. Murrhee. Roy was the second born Son and the last child welcomed into the World by his parents... His older Brother, Joseph Chandler was born on April 14th, 1915. *•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* Roy was a student through the first year of high school before entering into the workforce... At 19 he marries Bessie Beth Louise White in Sarasota, Florida on October 22nd, 1938... They welcome their first child on June 29th, 1939.... A Son they name Dewey Chandler Smith. On October 6th, 1941 Roy and Bessie complete their family with the birth of a Daughter who they bequeath the name Shirley Jean. 7 months later on May 2nd, 1942 the Smith family experiences unthinkable loss when young Matriarch Bessie Beth Louise Smith passes away at the age of 26. 2 months later in July of 1942 Roy enlists with the United States Marines in the midst of the 2nd World War... He would soon be assigned to the Pacific Ocean Theater. His 4th Marines Division took part in the seizure of Saipan and Tinian in the Summer of 1944. On February 19th, 1945 30,000 men of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on the Southeast coast of Iwo Jima... As soon as the Marines pushed inland towards a line of enemy bunkers they came under devastating machine gun & artillery fire which cut down many of the men.... By the end of the 1st day the Marines reached the West coast of the island but their losses totaled nearly 2,000 men either killed or wounded. On March 3rd, 1945 Roy who by had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant volunteered to lead a patrol of his fellow Marines & 2 tanks into the teeth of entrenched enemy territory... 74 years ago the Marines stormed the beaches of Iwo Jima. I’ve had the pleasure to be friends with a few of those men who made the landing. The stories and the way they talk about it were as if it happened yesterday. Our nations service members who served during WWII are some of the most humble and kind individuals you’ll encounter. To think about the things they saw, experienced and lived so many years with is humbling in itself. Here’s is Clarence, who has since passed. He is one of the men I befriended and was glad he shared some of his stories with me. Medal of Honor Recipient killed on Iwo Jima. World War II Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient John F. Basilone was one of the first Marines to be awarded the Medal of Honor during World War II. On Sunday night October 25th, 1942, at Lunga Ridge on Guadalcanal, about 1,000 yards south of Henderson Field, Japanese troops attacked. One of the Marine section leaders facing them was Sergeant Basilone. Basilone stayed with his men, repairing guns and changing barrels in almost total darkness, while giving encouragment to his men. One section of guns were overrun. Two men killed, three others wounded. Basilone took one of his guns on his back and raced for the breach in the line. Eight Japanese were surprised and killed. The guns were jammed by mud and water and a few yards away the Japanese were forming for another charge. Frantically stripping mud from the ammo belts men fed them into the guns as Basilone cleared jams and sprayed troops rushing at his positions with fixed bayonets and hand grenades. At 0300 a final Banzai charge took place. The full weight of the fanatical Japanese fell on Basilone and his men. He had set up a cross fire which smashed the charge. At least 38 dead Japanese were credited to Sergeant Basilone -- many killed with his Colt .45. Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone was killed leading his heavy machine gun squad off the beach on Iwo Jima on February 19th, 1945. He had just helped destroy an enemy blockhouse before he was hit by a mortar shell. He was the only Marine to be awarded both The Medal Of Honor and The Navy Cross during World War II. John F.
