June 10th, 1994 Speed premieres in theaters at #1 with a $14.4 million opening weekend. It would fall a week later to Wolf. Writer Graham Yost has said that almost all of the memorable dialogue was written by Joss Whedon during an uncredited rewrite. Stephen Baldwin turned down the lead role, saying the character felt too much like John McClane from Die Hard. Keanu Reeves shaved his head for the role without getting approval from the studio. Halle Berry and Ellen DeGeneres were both considered for the role of Annie before Sandra Bullock was cast. On a budget of $30 million, it would go on to make $121.2 million domestically (and another $229.2 million overseas), the 8th biggest movie of 1994.
