V A G I N A L A T R O P H Y A honest account.... I’m sat here crying. Prior to going on holiday I started to experience pain, itching and discomfort in my vulva/vagina. Immediately I thought it was thrush but a visit to the doctors ruled that out. As I wasn’t experiencing pain every time we had intercourse, we decided to see how I got along on holiday. That was a mistake, things became a lot worse, the itching was keeping me awake at night and felt so bad that I was tempted to wear scratch mitts! I felt incredibly bruised and dry and, at times, as though I’d been punched in the vulva. Out of all of my feelings: fear, frustration and embarrassment, I felt guilty. Guilty that I was on an amazing holiday and couldn’t be intimate because I was so uncomfortable. Luckily for me, my partner is incredibly supportive but Vaginal Atrophy has been just another knock back in my Surmeno journey. The flight home was a nightmare, I felt like my vulva was on fire and my knickers felt painful against my skin. On my return I messaged lovely Jane @my_menopausal_vagina and went straight to see my GP, who checked for infections etc (all fine) ruled out lichen sclerosis and prescribed ‘vagifem’. So far I’ve not seen much improvement but I’m hopeful it will work. So ladies, please check your vulva once a month, if your experiencing any symptoms then please get it checked and in the meantime avoid any fragranced products, try an organic lube to help make you more comfortable, wear 100% cotton undies and if itching is keeping you awake, a antihistamine can help! Yesterday in the Pelvic Health workshop, I spoke about Menopause and Atrophic Vaginitis, an often debilitating condition that affects women of peri/menopausal age. This condition results in vulval and vaginal pain, dry-tender-paper-thin skin, itching, burning and sensitivity to touch (including even clothing against the skin or wiping after a wee). This condition is often poorly understood or detected in the medical community, leaving millions of women to suffer in silence, with the condition affecting womens' social lives, work attendance, sexual activity and even daily showering is painful. I read this AMAZING book last year, which is one woman's account of her Atrophic Vaginitis, the difficulty she faced getting diagnosed, and the answers and treatment she finally got which changed her life. ... I believe this is a must read book for ALL women, not just the "over 45's". Please get it, either paper copy, or download it to a kindle app on your phone or tablet.
