Divorce is always hard. Divorcing an abuser is an entirely different realm. I came to the realization that I never really knew the person I spent nearly my entire life with when we entered the divorce process. Suddenly, his mask slipped, and the same man who was promising fidelity for reconciliation began treating me with disdain. Although I was shocked, his every action throughout the process verified that I made the right decision. However, once the legal divorce is over (I say this because they break the covenant of marriage long before the legality of divorce), there can be an expectation for you to “get over it.” But the reality is that the restoration of your soul can finally begin, and it gets messy. Messy isn’t comfortable for people. Be careful to not blame God for hardships you suffer because of another’s sin. The Lord is the One you can trust; the One who won’t abandon you; the One who won’t betray you; the One who won’t lie or slander you. Ever. He is the Lover of your Soul. One of my favourite Christian songs is "Mary did your know?" When I listen to the lyrics I think, this poor woman was chosen by God to give birth to a son that she would someday day watch suffer a violent death for all of our sins. They call her the blessed virgin Mary, but would we consider it a blessing to suffer the loss that she did? Would you? I cannot begin to imagine. So as we get closer to the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, let us also remember the suffering for all our sakes. We are the ones who are blessed!! We didn't have to sacrifice as Mary did, in order to receive eternal life. I also think of all those who have suffered the loss of their own children. Has your heart been broken? Shattered? Mine has, and God did heal it, completely. I have scars, I didn’t forget, but I’m whole and I’m free from the past because I sought the Lord and received His healing. For some reason, there are people who don’t want to move on. They actually choose to stay broken hearted and not be healed and set free. Why do we reject Christ’s healing and His work in us? I’m sure there are many reasons, but I think it boils down to fear.
