For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I wanted to show off a tool that has helped me tremendously in my smaller work space - my Vertical Bench Vise from @ottofrei1930 This heavy duty vise holds my ring mandrels, dapping tools, and other stakes securely while I hammer and form metal. I don’t own another larger vise and the holes in my bench don’t hold my mandrels securely enough for me to form metal on them so this has been a great solution for me! You can mount this awesome vise permanently or use the c-clamp. I have been using the c-clamp and its helpful for me because I don’t have a ton of space in my studio and I can store it when not in use. Although I do think a few screws into a bench top would make this thing crazy sturdy. The jaws of this vise have 2 grooves: one running back and forth-the other side to side, so you can mount your mandrel in either direction. The jaws open to a maximum height of 1-3/4”, and the C-clamp opens to accommodate up to a 2 1/4" benchtop. Sometimes when I use a traditional vise the mandrel will move a bit as I hammer, so I really appreciate the vertical jaws really lock it into place so I can focus on hammering. For this week’s #tooltalktuesday I’m showing off the amazing Whaley Hand Vise available from @ottofrei1930 (I’m actually showing off two of them because they are so awesome you’ll likely want two!) This simple hand vise (created by @whaleystudios) has a hole in the center so you can easily hold long wire or tubing. The handle has a flat side that not only allows you to firmly hold the hand vise against a flat surface, it also prevents it from rolling away. The grip is ergonomic and the chuck to loosen and tighten is easy to use. This is my go to tool if I want to coil a shorter piece of thick wire around a ring mandrel to make some stacking rings, or if I want to manually twist wire. It’s also great for straightening out a piece of wire. You can do this by attaching one end to your regular vise, and the other end to the Whaley hand vise and then give it a nice tug. This would also be great for holding wire and tubing while filing or polishing. I wonder if you could easily bend tubing with these, haven’t tried it yet but can’t imagine why not. Here is a tip for polishing some of those hard to reach spots: Dedeco Midgets! I received a few of these in last month’s @benchtooljunkies box and liked them so much I went ahead and bought enough to make a set! These polishing bits come in a wide variety of shapes, this one is the “bullet” shape ☝️I use them to clean the inside of a soldered bezel, the inside of rings, curved edges and bails. I use my diamond sharpening cards to reshape them as needed. I’ve found they hold their shape great, don’t kick up much dust (you should still use a mask ) and they polish great! As I do with anything that comes in different grits I made myself a little chart that says which grit is which and pinned it above my bench! @benchtooljunkies still have some available in the red and yellow grits so feel free to DM them! I will also share a kit I got off Amazon (warning it is pricey HOWEVER it has radial discs, midgets and points!) You can also find Dedeco at other retailers, they are great products so most people carry them! Glardon-Vallorbe's Buff Files are not cut like your traditional files, rather they are diamond/ceramic coated and the desired finish is directly proportional to the amount of pressure you impose. If compared to an abrasive grit, the Buff File would be considered between 500-800 grit but if used with light pressure they can be compared to almost 900-1200 grit!
