The man responsible for this ad, a breakthrough in tv commercials as it was filmed in real time, was named Tom Lyle Williams. He was the founder of Maybelline in 1915 after watching his sister Mabel apply a mixture to her lashes and brows that added sparkle and sheen. It turns out Tom Lyle Williams was a gay man, and with his partner Emery Shaver, together they created Maybelline and a completely new product to enter the market, Mascara. He of course had to stay closeted as those times one could not be “out” without disgracing the family and ultimately losing the company. He and his partner were together until the day Emery died and he finally sold the company. Through this and #NYCPride coming up I want to celebrate Tom Lyle Williams and Emery Shaver for their contributions to beauty.
