Synaptik - Justify and Reason (2017), Mechanisms of Consequence (2014) These guys need more attention! They evolved from the tech-thrash band Inner Sanctum to become Synaptik, a modern progressive metal band based in Norwich, England. Featuring vocalist John Knight and guitarist Ian Knight, Synaptik has finally found their sound. While Inner Sanctum had a very complex and heavy sound, Synaptik has them going more for melody and solid song writing. This two disc release from Divebomb includes the two Synaptik releases, although in a different form than the original release by The Snakes on Fire version - J&R previously included 4 songs carried over from MoC- on this version it is only 5 songs comprising 35 minutes. I think this is important, as their sound changed between the two releases- and for the better. While MoC is a heavier, less melodic album- think Gojira with clean vocals- J&R is less heavy, but more melodic. But more importantly -BETTER SONGS!! The songwriting improved tremendously - seriously this stuff was stuck in my head for days! There are very memorable riffs and vocal lines, especially "The Incredible Machine" and "White Circles". The musicianship is top notch, tight guitars and bass, interesting solos and phenomenal drumming- but the standout is John Knight's vocals - clean, mid to high register, but without any silly screaming or falsetto. Haven't heard any singer better than him in a long time- really quite impressive stuff. There are lots of influences floating around in Synaptik - little snippets of Meshuggah, Metallica, Dream Theater, Disturbed, Incubus, Fates Warning, The Tea Party, Rainbow, etc. These may not be artists they are directly influenced by, but just bands that flash through my head while listening to them. Justify and Reason is 35 minutes of modern progressive metal that stands out as being original, interesting and infectious. I listen to tons of new metal, and most of it leaves little impact, but Synaptik has kept me coming back over and over as the catchiness and complexity continue to lead me down different paths. If you find 80s prog metal feeling a little stale, Synaptik may be the perfect remedy. Check them out!!
