The idea of integrating the grille and the bumper into one (plastic) unit probably originated at Citroën in the mid ‘70s. It was first seen on the 1978 Visa, where it looked rather clumsy and would become known as the piggy-nose.
Opel used a far more accomplished version of the idea on the 1982 Corsa and the 1984 Kadett E. Untill September 1989 all Kadetts except for the GSI had this bumper/grille combination. For the 1989 model year the front was facelifted and given a separate grille, in line with the new Opel Omega.
The four-door Kadett was launched at the IAA in Frankfurt in September 1985, a year after the hatchback. Opel originally called it the Kadett ‘Formheck’ – the usual word being Stufenheck. It was marketed as a separate model, with its own brochures. In the UK it even got its own name: the Vauxhall Belmont.
