The three-decks high operatic First Class dining room of the liner Kaiser Wilhelm II (1902) spreading over the entire beam of the ship. Architect Johannes Poppe designed this vast public room in his characteristic ‘meringue’ take on baroque aesthetics. His style of decoration, which relied heavily on historicism, was also known as ‘Bremen baroque’ and was used on several German ocean liners prior to the Kaiser Wilhelm II. Notice how the seating is still arranged along tables with swivel chairs fixed on the floor. Such configuration will disappear a few year later onboard, among other, the Mauretania launched in 1906 (© Hapag-Lloyd Archive Bremen). #oceanliners #oceanliner #kaiserwhilhelm #ship #1900s #johannespoppe #decoration #bremen
