The Dyatlov Pass Incident: Part 1: The Expedition and Group. Snow ski hiking was a common winter pass-time in the Soviet Union. In January of 1959 a group of graduate and enrolled students at the Ural Polytechnical Institute decided to take a trip to get certified as professional mountain hikers. The groups main goal was to reach the Mountain of Ortorten in the Ural Mountains which bordered Siberia to the East. Despite the mountains being a not so challenging climb, the temperature sank to around -30°C with strong winds. The path of the terrain was categorized as “Category 3” or very difficult to traverse in the winter, this demanded a very high level of fitness from the students. The group was formed up of 10 students in total from the Ural Polytechnical Institute. 8 men and 2 women. All but 1 of them were students or graduates of the university. The list is as follows: Igor Dyatlov (23), the groups leader, a student of engineering and avid radio mechanic. Alexander Kolevatov (24), a nuclear physics student, previous to the institute he worked on a Soviet secret military project who’s purpose was developing nuclear weapons for the military. Semyon Zolotaryov (38) was a retired WWII veteran and an avid climber, the most experienced of the group, he joined the group in order to gain his certification that would make him a master instructor. Yuri (Georgiy) Krivonischenko (23), was a construction and hydraulics student and was the groups joker. Lyudmila Dubinina (20) was a dedicated communist and studied economics. Nikolai Thibeaux-Brignolles (23), he was a graduate of the institute where he got a civil construction degree, he promised his parents this would be his last expedition. Rustem Slobodin (23), a graduate of mechanical engineering. Yuri Doroshenko (21) was a radio engineering student. Zinaida Kolmogorova (22) was a radio engineering student. Yuri Yudin (21) was an economic student who suffered from rheumatisms which would save his life later on.
