It takes understanding what safety actually feels + looks like TO A CHILD. ____ Imagine you were just hired for a new job. However you weren’t given a job description. No detailed instruction of your duties. No training. No manual. Nada. The first week your boss shows up and throws a fit. He is disappointed in your performance, and you are suspended. Wait, what?! . _____ This is how a child feels when we approach transitions + challenges with the mindset of “they have to learn sometime. Life is hard, figure it out! I can’t do it all for you!” . ____ Truth is— children utilize all of their precious resources to re establish their own safety if it is not established for them. They literally go into survival mode, and are unable to learn, connect or play. Here, we tend to punish behavior instead of pursuing the underlying unmet need lack of safety. ___ I shared more in depth on my stories about this today. Take a peek. As a parent, it’s not easy to resist being swept away by the desire of wanting my children to do well academically. I have to remind myself often that numbers, spelling and all the other “by the book” standards of excelling are not nearly as important as the the major foundational building blocks seen here on the right. ______ I do my best to remember the research. Children who feel safe, play often and learn to regulate are some of the most successful in cognitive, social + emotional settings. Longterm, we must remember as parents that grades and pace aren’t as important as we may think. Truth is, children aren’t here to perform for us, make us proud or live out what we didn’t. ____ The greatest hindrance to my girl’s success is when I attempt to control their natural gifts, stifle their curiosity, or interrupt their play for other “more important” things.
