Roy Vernon Leroy Smith was born 100 years ago on January 8th, 1919 in Tampa, Florida to his Father, LeRoy Lamonby Smith and Mother, Verdie M. Murrhee. Roy was the second born Son and the last child welcomed into the World by his parents... His older Brother, Joseph Chandler was born on April 14th, 1915. *•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* Roy was a student through the first year of high school before entering into the workforce... At 19 he marries Bessie Beth Louise White in Sarasota, Florida on October 22nd, 1938... They welcome their first child on June 29th, 1939.... A Son they name Dewey Chandler Smith. On October 6th, 1941 Roy and Bessie complete their family with the birth of a Daughter who they bequeath the name Shirley Jean. 7 months later on May 2nd, 1942 the Smith family experiences unthinkable loss when young Matriarch Bessie Beth Louise Smith passes away at the age of 26. 2 months later in July of 1942 Roy enlists with the United States Marines in the midst of the 2nd World War... He would soon be assigned to the Pacific Ocean Theater. His 4th Marines Division took part in the seizure of Saipan and Tinian in the Summer of 1944. On February 19th, 1945 30,000 men of the 3rd, 4th, and 5th Marine Divisions landed on the Southeast coast of Iwo Jima... As soon as the Marines pushed inland towards a line of enemy bunkers they came under devastating machine gun & artillery fire which cut down many of the men.... By the end of the 1st day the Marines reached the West coast of the island but their losses totaled nearly 2,000 men either killed or wounded. On March 3rd, 1945 Roy who by had been promoted to the rank of Sergeant volunteered to lead a patrol of his fellow Marines & 2 tanks into the teeth of entrenched enemy territory... Roy's experience was integral in the destruction of 2 Japanese positions before he is mortally wounded while leading his comrades into battle. *•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•*•* Roy Vernon Leroy Smith...
