Say happy anniversary to my new knee people! I’ve made it to 1 year post op today!! Given I only made it to 5 months after my first surgery before something went wrong this feels like a bit of an achievement and I started my day boxing away at one of my fave studios. My leg is stronger than it’s ever been. Yes, I have to be careful about what I choose to do (no marathons for me!) but I can really do anything I want! I’m highly likely to need surgeries on both my knees in the future that are likely to involve a meniscus implant and some articular cartilage smoothing but that’s just to protect them in the long-term and so are hopefully for another year....! To quote my surgeon from last week “my knee caps won’t fall off any time soon..!” which is always good to know...! Thanks to everyone on here that has provided support, guidance and encouragement to me on this brutal journey. You’re all awesome! And a special thanks to my lovely man who has had to listen to A LOT of knee chat...! If you don’t become a knee bore during rehab then did you even have knee surgery...?! ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Nothing changes if it isn’t challenged ✨ Whilst I’ve been able to do box jumps for a while now, I’ve not done them as part of a class as, to be honest, they scared me. The bench in my class is narrow, the studio is dark and there is sweat everywhere...! But today, perhaps fuelled by my surgeon’s encouragement yesterday, my class involved an AMRAP which included box jumps and I just went for them! Even though it was an AMRAP, I did them slowly and carefully but this feels like the final hurdle for me as it’s the only exercise that I’ve not embraced in a class environment since my surgery. Not the biggest achievement in the world but I was scared doing them today, and I will probably still be scared the next time I do them, but sometimes you have to do things even if they scare you, if you want to progress.... Happy hump day people. We’ve got this! ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are what we repeatedly do. Starting the week early by punching a bag and lifting some weights. Monday is push/pull and I love it! I’m approaching one year post my second knee surgery and I’d say I’ve finally got my cardio fitness back and if anything I’m stronger than ever.... ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I remember my physio saying to me at the start of this looooooong rehab journey that most people don’t get back to being 100%, not because they can’t but because the last 20% takes so long relative to the first 80% and most people just accept their new 80% as being as good as it gets. But we both knew that wouldn’t be me as I’m a total perfectionist. Whilst that’s not always a good thing, it has made me do all of the tedious physio exercises and stretching and has allowed me to fully rebuild my leg. So, people going through this awful journey. Don’t settle for second best. You can do it, you just have to want it enough...! ✨

Do you have trouble hitting depth on squat OR do you have really achey knees? Here are a few great warmup ideas including some hip flexor stretches & medial glute activation exercises. Most problems arise from tight hips & weak medial glutes, therefore we need to open the hips up & strengthen the glutes! I hope these help; let me know if you have any other questions or want me to do more of these kinds of videos!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
stretches: hold for 30 seconds each side
1️⃣ bulgarian split squat hip flexor stretch
2️⃣ one foot elevated hip flexor stretch
3️⃣ pigeon stretch
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
glute activation/strengthening exercises: 2x15-20 each
4️⃣ standing banded side kicks or abductors
5️⃣ banded hip thrusts
6️⃣ banded seated abductions
7️⃣ banded side steps
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
like, save & tag a friend who has tight hips or achey knees who could use this warmup

Sooo premise for this post. I feel like as much as I hate the video I think it’s really important to talk about it. So the first picture here is on my left leg (the one with only one surgery done on it) - because I started my yoga journey as a form of rehab, I favored balance postures on this side from day one. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, it was what I needed to do at the time. It’s comfortable, no pain, definitely active but nothing makes me want to cringe or instantly leave this posture. .

So a couple points I wanted to visit.
.
1. This is what happens when you force a posture for the gram. IT SO RARELY EVER WORKS THE WAY YOU WANT IT TO. And frankly everyone has talked this point to death on this platform but if anyone needs I can always talk about it again later
.
.
2. This knee, the one I’m standing on, has gone through two surgeries. One at 16 and one in my early 20’s. It will never be the exact same as my left knee. Sometimes it can’t do things. And allowing forgiveness and understanding has been so crucial, and at times devastatingly hard to deal with. .
.
Healing is not for the weak. It is a journey. It is hard work. It is constant. It is demanding. But it is SO WORTH IT. Never give up on yourself, you are worth the investment. .
