As @dr.vanessalapointe says - think of connection like a see saw. If your child feels disconnected from you, if they are not feeling seen and heard, then they often sit up high with resistance. . The more connection sits up high, the less resistance children have. When that connection is strong, children are often more willing to do as they are asked. Their natural state is to please you, to feel connected to you, to lean into that love and joy. . So next time you ask your child to do something for the 5th time or next time you get a lot of resistance from your child - check to see if you need to lean in and build some connection first. It could be as simple as getting on their level and offering eye contact and changing the tone of your voice. It could be engaging in a few minutes of play or silliness. It could be tuning in and seeing that there is actually some big feelings on board and they need a gentle " hey, are you ok, can I help you in some way?" . Great parents session last night at a lovely school that I have been working with. This school has seen the need for continuous ongoing conversations with their students around all aspects of sexuality education. They are implementing programs for every year level so the kids hear the information many times and it becomes a safe conversation to have within their community. A beautiful tradition Lael! Credit to @laelstone : For a long time I really wanted to create a tradition for our family. Something that could be passed down, something that would cement the love and values we were wanting to imprint with our kids. So whenever there is a birthday we create a little alter and when we have a family dinner to celebrate, everyone takes in turns and tells the person who’s birthday it is what we love and admire in them. It’s been amazing over the years to reflect on the growth and wisdom and uniqueness as the kids grow. My favorite part is always watching the birthday person receive these words of love and acknowledgment from the family. It can be hard to receive praise and kind words, we can be quick to joke about it or pass it off. I have loved witnessing how they take in the love and really hear it. To be seen, to be accepted for who you are it’s all our hearts desire. And then - the birthday person gets to share what they love about themselves or what they are proud of and we all cheer for their awesomeness Today I am honouring and loving on my baby as she turns 11. This kid has shown me the meaning of grace, surrender and trust. When teaching SexEd to high school kids, often my favorite part is the anonymous questions that they ask. I stipulate that they can ask me ANYTHING!!! . Nothing is off the table and believe it or not, most of the questions are very genuine. Some are quite funny and some are being cheeky, but I read all questions out and often refer it back to the kids to see if anyone has the answer before I give them my thoughts. . Without a doubt, the main questions I get from the girl's classes are about menstruation, and whether sex hurts. There is a lot in those questions that teens are wanting to know. . I love chatting to them all about their hormones and getting to know their own bodies and what I deeply wish is that these conversations I am having with these teens are then followed up at home. These conversations become normalised and don't carry a sense of shame or embarrassment with them. . I know that for many parents, these were not conversations they had with their own parents, but I really do believe that we can do better around all these topics. Let's empower teens to understand their bodies so they can make informed choices around intimate relationships, sex, contraception, consent and pleasure. . The last 2 weeks I have spent lots of time with 14 and 15 yr olds discussing Sex, Consent, Boundaries, Sexuality, Sexual Health, Body Image and Self Worth. . Without a doubt, these kids have a much bigger platform in which to compare themselves. For us, we compared ourselves to kids at school or perhaps the people on Neighbours or Home and Away! But our teens are seeing the whole world and it shouts very loudly about who and what they should be. . It was inspiring to hear some of these kids speak up about the pressure they feel to be 'enough' whether that's with their looks or their grades. We had some very candid conversations about not liking parts of ourselves and how we could bring more self-love and acceptance to the party and the greatest gift they could give themselves sometimes is to turn up the music, dance wildly and drown out all the other noise. . I feel hopeful for our teens. They are smart and switched on and want change. It just takes a few brave voices to sing above the pack. .
