Just getting out of the Lancaster Bomber, nbd! Lol . . Alright so this weekend I didn’t fly in the Lancaster (the only working one in the world available for civilians to fly on!) BUT if you swipe to the next photo you’ll see, we got to fly in the Dakota DC-3, which was an original warplane that even flew in Normandy on D-day! This was actually a bday present I got Simon a while back, but these flights don’t always fly so we went yesterday. The flight itself was loud and felt choppy but it gave you an idea of what it was like fighting in the war! It only sat 4 people! So I guess you could call it a private jet lol but mostly it was an incredible historical experience! 75th D-Day commemorative flypast – ready for today’s flight! The aircraft will form over Caledonia at 12:06 pm, fly directly to the RBC Canadian Open in Ancaster (after which the current RCAF will depart), then to Dundas, over the McMaster Children’s Hospital, along the escarpment to Stoney Creek, back along King/Barton to the Skyway Bridge and then back to Hamilton Airport over the Museum. Following the flight, at 3:00 pm at the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, parachutists from the Dakota will perform a jump to commemorate the paratroopers who would have done so 75 years ago. On June 6 (12 noon) to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum will fly three aircraft types that would have participated on D-Day – the C-47 Dakota, B-25 Mitchell and Avro Lancaster – in a formation flight over Hamilton and surrounding area. Leading the formation will be Dakota FZ692 – an actual D-Day veteran aircraft that was flown by a Canadian on D-Day. Routing, timing and additional details (including a parachute jump) to be announced shortly. . . Photo 1: Late on June 5, 1944, Dakota FZ692 (with RAF 233 Squadron) departed RAF Blakehill Farm with Canadian J.P.R. McRae at the controls with a full contingent of paratroopers in the back. Once at the jump zone, the Dakota slowed down to only 100 mph (with flaps down) at only 600-700 feet for the paratroopers to jump. At this speed and height, the Dakota was an easy target but FZ692 made it back safely after almost 4 hours. . . Photo 2: RAF B-25 Mitchells operating from Dunsfold flew raids on June 6, 1944 beginning in the very early morning hours against German defenses in Normandy, preparing the way for Allied troop landings. . . Photo 3: Late on June 5, 1944, RCAF 419 Squadron Lancasters including KB726 VR-A piloted by Art de Bryne departed on a 4 1/2 hour op to Merville. The aim of the op was to disorganize and slow German reinforcements heading for the landing beaches. When the Lancasters arrived over the target, it was hidden by cloud cover. The Pathfinder group had dropped flares but through the clouds only a faint glow could be seen by the bomber group coming in over the target. Some bombs were dropped amongst the faint glow of the flares and there were two explosions. With no visible way to confirm the damage, if any, to the targets, the operation was not a successful one.
