My friend Clavel challenged me to post 10 books that have made a big impact on me. So over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing a little about them, in between my regular posts. I LOVE learning and gobble up non fiction like it’s my job - in a way, it is! • The first book that has made a big impact on me is “Start With Why” by Simon Sinek. It really is more of a book about leadership and motivation than business, and I have applied it mostly to my work with clients. • I love how Sinek teaches that the best companies and leaders learn to inspire (rather than manipulate) people into following and buying from them. Take a look at his “Golden Circle” diagram and remember, you want to build out from the center, just like this. • One memorable example of “starting with why” from the book was the Apple pitch that Simon Sinek shared. (He also uses this frequently in his talks to explain how people buy from Apple, not necessarily for the product, but because of what the company itself represents to them and how it builds on their sense of identity.) Here is the pitch from the book, imagined by Sinek: “Everything we do, we believe in challenging the status quo. We believe in thinking differently. The way we challenge the status quo is by making our products beautifully designed, simple to use and user-friendly. And we happen to make great computers. Wanna buy one?” • See how they put the product at the very end? Really, it’s not the product people buy, it’s the idea of what buying from you says about them. In my world of marketing, it’s rare to see people starting with the “why” - and even rarer to see it done in an inspiring way. It’s something I try to do when I write for my clients, and I hope to keep growing in this area. • Deeply grateful for this book and how it changed my thinking.
