As a byproduct of my absence I felt no better way to return to the “‘gram” than with the next instalment of the Holy Grail series. The 2497 (present watch) alongside the sister 2438 (waterproof version) were both launched in 1951. Particularly poignant because this marked a first for a perpetual calendar with centre seconds to be made in series. Another first for Patek. Across both references scholars suggest only 179 examples were made, with the overwhelming majority of cases in yellow gold. A very rare bird indeed. The 2497 can be divided into two distinct series. The first features feuille hands and applied Arabic numbers while the second carries baton indexes and dauphine hands. Tied to the immense aesthetic appeal of the 2497, this reference, along with the 2499 are considerably important to me. Both produced during the golden age of Patek in the 50s, they have both stood the test of time elevating to an unrivalled echelon of horological excellence. Why? Purity. They set the benchmark for what it means to be called a watch. And the flattering copycats have testified to this in their creations. I’ve often said, one can probably find some obscure independent who can better Patek in an individual area, perhaps at anglage or perhaps at cotes de Geneve amongst other matters. My response has always been the same. I note production volumes (hardly fair to compare production levels of under 100 vs 60,000 approx). I further continue my thesis that Patek has managed to marry in the most perfect of ways, every single facet of watchmaking into one piece. So while one brand might excel at one particular thing, Patek excels at everything and most importantly brings everything in a harmonious unison. However, beyond this, alongside the other unrivalled crowns they hold, dial design must surely be one of them. Pure unadulterated beauty. Something many others have tried and failed. They’ve created a timeless design that quite clearly has had it’s influential touch felt by all in our little watch world. As far as dial proportions and balance are concerned, Patek are the undisputed horoloweight champions of the world... in my opinion of course. Holy Grail XXIV
