I have been using the Fail Faster: playtesting journal by @jay.cormier for my games and I have been noticing a big difference! I am naturally very unorganized but love to analyze trends so this is definitely a strong solution for me. Today I thought that I might review my first fully completed legacy game, Pandemic Legacy Season 1. When we started dating, Ben was already halfway through playing Season 1 with another of our board game group members, so I missed out on that and jumped right into playing Season 2 with them. Although you don’t NEED Season 1 to understand Season 2, it sure feels like you do when everyone is comparing game play, event cards, and upgrades. This past year, for BGG’s Secret Santa Ben wound up getting Season 1 so that we could play again, and we started immediately. I absolutely loved Season 1. The story was exciting with plenty of twists and turns, and the game play developed at such a rate that you feel overwhelmed for a minute or two, and then confident in knowing what you’re doing right before everything changed again. It was extremely fun in playing through the games to try to find out what was going to happen next (especially as your actions have an impact on this). We played Gloomhaven again last night! I was very nervous, being the tank I got spanked right away and was bleeding out all over the floor, but we did surprisingly well and both crit on the boss to KO him!! Game 3 of #Charterstone and I think I’m done. Unfortunately, this session killed it for me and I have no desire to continue. Spoilers below.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Spoilers for the game. I will say that I like the #legacy progression of introducing mechanics. It’s enjoyable to see what new things you unlock. Friend cards are great in concept and ghosts are clearly the best. What really soured my taste was the guidepost. You do not scratch these off until the end of the game and it randomly introduces a hidden scoring mechanic. The one for game 3 is the option to score the end of campaign scores of buildings for this game only. The person who ended up making the choice, had the most buildings built with the most points in buildings. Everyone was in the 30-40 point range prior to the bonus at game end. That player scored 57 points just from the random bonus at the end. Next was 25~ points behind. Nothing I did that game mattered at all. THE RISE OF QUEENSDALE SPOILER WARNING! This is a legacy game. Swipe at your own risk! Quotable "Man bag!!!" I missed taking photos of our third game of Queensdale but here's the game state after games 4 and 5. So far, our burroughs are growing and new buildings and building types are being built. We've discovered a new building material, which is super hard to find in the game, and there was a scramble to be first to build the corresponding buildings. Robber barons have come into play. New people are going into (and getting pulled out of) the man bag. We have still only ever found the Oracle twice, despite certain players' focus on running around and grabbing every herb token they can get their hands on. Also, our families have come into play in unexpected ways, which is cool. I look forward to seeing more of that in coming games. So far I'm really really happy with the catch up mechanic in this game. I deliberately tried to lose a game because of the potential benefits. It was a different kind of puzzle trying to figure out how to reach a certain threshold but still not win! One person in the group mentioned he likes Charterstone more. I have been thinking about this and... I like the gameplay of Queensdale better, because I do enjoy the dice rolling and upgrading even if they've screwed me over sometimes. However, I also find that Queensdale doesn't really change as drastically as Charterstone did from game to game. So maybe that's the difference? We will see.

We started our campaign of The Rise of Queensdale last night. We have a small weekly gaming group of four and we were looking for a Legacy game to play. There aren't too many out there and we liked the theme of this one. ~~~ Set up took a while, but it was fun going through it with everyone. We also played through our first game. My initial thoughts are good so far. There's dice placement, which I prefer over just worker placement and the turns go pretty quickly. ~~~ Three of us had played Charterstone earlier this year, so it's nice having that to compare to. Although I enjoyed having the surprise boxes and cards to open in Charterstone, I think I actually like the gameplay of this better and I'm very excited to see what the game has in store for us and how our actions/gameboard will be changing. ~~~ ***Update 11/18*** We actually finished our campaign last night after 17 games. I really enjoyed every minute of it. The game changes at the perfect pace and continues to change till the end. Charterstone, notre premier Legacy! ♟1-6 60-120 Mins 69,90€ @philibertjeux Alors autant le dire de suite, pas de suspense, nous avons adoré la première partie. @jameystegmaier qu’on ne présente plus (Scythe, Viticulture, ...) nous offre un Legacy (jeu évolutif) accessible, touchant et intelligent. Transporté dans le monde Charterstone, nos trois petits sujets (3 joueurs sur 6) ont pour mission de bâtir un nouveau village. Chacun aura la tache de développer un des 6 quartiers du village, en utilisant son savoir faire spécifique. C’est de la pose d’ouvrier, du développement et de la construction en même temps. Les tours sont très rapide en début, on collecte les resources, on regarde les éléments disposés et vient le moment d’ouvrir sa première caisse. Je n’en dis pas plus, à vous de découvrir... Graphiquement, c’est une réussite (mon avis), répétitif oui et non mais ce n’est pas un point négatif tellement c‘est rapide, c’est surtout une course aux points de victoire. On a pris plaisir à entrer dans ce monde, on a juste envie de continuer et de découvrir la suite de l’histoire. In short, no suspense, we loved our first game. We no longer introduce Jameystegmaier (Scythe, Viticulture, ...) offers us a Legacy accessible, moving and smart. Transported to the Charterstone’s world, our three small subjects (3 players out of 6) have for mission to build a new village. Everyone will have the task of developing one of the six charter of the village, using his specific skills. This is worker placement , development and construction at the same time. The round are very fast at the beginning, we collect the resources, we look at the arranged elements and comes the moment to open our first crate. No more spoil, let you discover by yourself... Graphic charter is a success (my opinion), repetitive yes and no but it is not a negative point because it’s fast, it is especially a race to victory points. Charterstone - L’histoire continue 3️⃣ Une troisième partie et toujours pas de victoire. Mais un jeu qui commence à prendre de l’ampleur. De nouvelles règles, une mécanique de début de partie qui s’installe bien, une carte consigne qui amène un objectif de groupe de fin de partie et des parties de plus en plus serrées. C’est du tout bon et on prend vraiment plaisir à développer son village ainsi que de soigner sa fin de partie qui peut arriver très vite. Pas facile de choisir quoi garder pour la prochaine partie... Juste petite erreur en fin de deuxième partie en gardant un peu trop de cartes dans notre inventaire. A third game and still no victory. But a game that is starting to grow. New rules, a start-of-game mechanic which settles well, a directive card that brings an end-of-game group objective and a more and more tight games. It's a perfect one for now and we really enjoy developing our village and thinking how well finishing the game (can arrive very quickly).
