This rooftop parking entrance to this mall is probably one of the last original outer sections. Once the new mall opens up, my guess is this entire older wing will be torn down. When we first moved to Canada from Japan, we’d come here every weekend and enjoy malted milkshakes. Good times

Thirty years ago in April, I woke up to a 5am phone call in Paris- Peter Turnley sharing with me that he had gone to Beijing for Newsweek and in the middle of the night had been alerted to the fact that a dozen students had laid wreaths at the foot of a statue in Tiananmen Square in honor of Hu Yaobong, a reform government minister who had died. Peter shared that while this didn’t on the surface seem like a big event- that such an act was unheard of in China- and suggested that I pack my bags for Beijing. In the following weeks, those 12 students grew to upwards of two million students who had gathered on the square seeking a different status quo in China in what became known as the Pro-Democracy Movement. In the night between June 3rd and June 4th, the protests were forcibly suppressed after the government declared martial law and sent in the military in what became known as the Tiananmen Square Massacre. I will post photographs over these next days, inspired for Chinese and the world to know what happened.
