I just got back from a wonderful 2 weeks in Nigeria. It’s always great to be home. While there, I spent time visiting a few bookstores and noticed that there aren’t a lot of chapter books (for kids aged 6 to 12) with diverse characters. Many of the chapter books were written by foreign authors, yet there is a thirst for more books like Feyi Fay. The kids who read the book while I was there couldn’t put it down and were so eager to read the second book. This was such a powerful experience because it proved to me that I’m on the right path... Before I left, I was able to partner with 4 amazing bookstores who are now carrying book #1. How to make name writing fun? There’s lots of ways but currently I’m enticing children by making their names glow!! In the process we’re also learning about fluorescence and ultraviolet light at our sensory table and science table. Children are encouraged to make a name poster (or write a letter, etc) using the highlighters at the sensory table and then take it under our little tent area at the science table to see it glow, using uv torches. There’s also a glow-in-the-dark tic-tac-toe set and two bottles of water (one regular and one “magic” that glows blue under the uv light) under there to add to the experience. Next week I’ll add @micador fluoro paint discs to the sensory table to continue the fun. #learnwithplay

Ready or not, here comes another week! It’s actually (finally) spring break over here and I couldn’t be more ready or grateful. Seriously was starting to feel the burnout - yiiiiikes! Something I have learned over the years is to try my best to keep a routine while on any break. That way when it’s time to get back to work I don’t have this terrible “break inertia” to fight. Routines not only help me feel better but they help me maintain my productivity and sense of security. They do this for our kids, too! Since I have a little extra time on my hands this week, I thought I’d share with you some tips for incorporating books into your daily routines: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ✨Keep a basket of books in your room to provide some independent exploration for your kids while you try to get ready ✨Grab some interactive and engaging type books for car rides when running errands or longer trips ✨Snuggle up and read a book together before naptime or bedtime. ✨Try “blanket time” when you need some quiet. Lay out a blanket and set a timer while providing books. Then model the quiet time by reading a book yourself. ✨Use a book before doing an activity, craft, or making a snack. One of our favorite books (I’m a Hungry Dinosaur) is illustrated with chocolate *winkwink* ✨Keep non-fiction books on hand to support older children during homework time after school. ✨Keep fun and silly story books in the bathroom to read during bath time. Don’t worry if they don’t look like they’re listening. Read anyway. ✨Keep a book or two on YOUR night stand and practice what you preach by reading before bed every night.
