Last year we had an adult raccoon with us for a short time. It was hard. But I loved her. She ended up staying in the neighborhood, and would occasionally come to visit. One of my absolute favorite things was when Lois would come for grapes, and she would hold my hand in her soft paws until she got to eat all of them. Today a neighbor contacted me. Raccoons keep getting into their attic. They had trapped and released 2 of them out of the neighborhood, but the trap wasn't working for the other ones they were trying to catch. I haven't seen Lois since March and I'm pretty sure she was removed from the neighborhood. I am devastated. Not only will she not survive outside of the neighborhood, but any raccoons in the area where she was released will likely maim or kill her.
Please don't trap and relocate raccoons. I told the neighbor that they need to put a light and a radio on in their attic. The raccoons will move out on their own. Then they need to call and have their attic sealed up. Why you wouldn't seal it the first time is beyond me. Removing the neighborhood raccoons will not keep new ones from moving in. In fact, it will invite new ones. Live and let live. Take steps to make your house unattractive to wildlife (Don't leave trash or food out, etc). Removing Lois was unnecessary. I know they meant well, but my heart is broken today. I miss my girl so much.

Oh how this girl loves her grapes and eggs! If you have grapes, she won't let go of your hand until she knows you don't have any left. It's one of the things I miss most. Raccoon paws are surprisingly smooth and soft and I love the way they feel. We've been seeing our grape monster more these last few days... Has me wondering if she's pregnant (I hope that is NOT the case). Time will tell.

We finally saw both Lois and NotLois in the yard at the same time! Clearly they get along. Whether they are gal pals, or a male/female couple we aren't sure (I'm personally leaning towards 2 females). And in the second video we have a REALLY brave NotLois. I'm still not sure what to make of her comfort with people.

I've had a few people ask about Lois, NotLois and NotNotLois. We havent been up late enough to see them, but last night, NotLois showed up for some food. NotLois is as brave as ever and is looking good!

Apparently there is a hierarchy in our yard. This little possum was happily getting rid of our cat food problem when Lois arrived. Lois didn't seem to care, but this poor guy apparently wasn't willing to risk it, despite obviously wanting to stay for more food.

Today CK is grateful for a warm cozy house with a tray full of food and Lois is grateful for her veggies! I am so grateful for all of you who have followed us on this journey. This will probably be our last Lois update. Over the last week, I've worried more and more about Lois and whether or not she was ok. Last night, I just had this feeling and I kept looking out into the backyard. I saw a raccoon, but the minute it saw me it ran off, so I assumed it was NotLois. I was climbing into bed when my husband called me to the back door, and we were pretty sure we were looking at Lois. She ran off when I unlocked the back door. I figured she probably didn't go far, so I put some grapes and eggs on the patio, and we turned off the lights in the house so we could get a better look. You guys. It was Lois! She ate the grapes and took an egg with her (she came back soon after to grab the second one). She is wild and had no interest in being near us. While it's sad we may not see her again, this is a BIG success!! This is exactly what we wanted, we just weren't sure it would happen. Our girl is living her best raccoon life, and is not dependent on us at all. I am over the moon! Another successful release. I am now even more excited about the upcoming baby season!
