Traitors Gate, The Tower of London. Originally known as the watergate, this was used as a water entrance via the Thames to the Tower Of London. 17th-18th Century Key. Found on the River Thames foreshore, London. . On 17th January 1728, one Richard Jones of Shoreditch, was tried for 'Burglariously breaking into the House of Thomas Melcher'. In his defence he claimed that 'being in Drink he stumbled against the Door, which was open, and that he knew of nothing further'. Several 'pick-lock Keys' were found at the scene however, and Jones was found guilty and sentenced to death. . On 14th Oct 1702 Elizabeth Smith was tried for 'breakings the House of John Walters...while a little Girl went out to fetch a pint of Drink'. She was caught in the act by the little girl on her return, searched and 'a pick-lock key' was found 'in her Bosom, which lock'd and unlock'd the Door very well'. She was sentenced to whipping. (Swipe for trial record). . These were just two of the 4,436 cases involvolving burglary or housebreaking tried at the Old Bailey between 1675 and 1799. The trial records mention lock picking in around half of them. This illustrate the ease with which locks of the period could be picked with special implements, or simply a knife.
